Vocal Microphone Cable

I bought a microphone. Now what?
My friend and I have started a band recently and we’re in the process of acquiring all of the equipment we need to actually play. I’m the lead singer and I’m looking into microphones; the difference between them, the different brands, reviews, etc, etc and it looks like the Shure SM58 is a good mic to start with… which leads me to my real question.
How does it work? The microphone plugs into, I’m assuming, a microphone cable? What kind of cable? and then the cable plugs into? an amp? a special amp designed for vocals?
As you can see, it’s all new information to me so these are like FAQ questions. Absolute basic knowledge that I’m looking for. Thanks in advance.
If you are recording to a computer, your microphone is probably designed to plug into one, or else you bought the wrong mic. When you bought the computer-oriented microphone, it should also come with some software or at least some instructions on how to get the sound into your computer. It will record and then you can mix recordings by downloading other programs.
However, if you are talking about the kind of microphones they use in recording studios, I’m afraid the microphone itself is not going to be the end of your financial setbacks. Usually in studios the microphones lead to a sound mixing desk, where all the instruments’ leads go. The sound from each instrument is now in the desk, which is where you mix the sounds to sound better (ie; make the aggressive drummer softer than the shy singer, etc). After that you need to plug THAT into a computer and burn it onto a CD.
In a concert situation, the microphone is plugged into an amp. All the instruments are amplified by some means so that everyone attending the concert can hear.
Hope this helped, I’m not an expert on microphones!
